GO BEYOND COMPETENCY
As of 1999, there are roughly five hundred thousand clinically trained psychotherapists (social workers, psychologists, licensed counselors, and psychiatrists) in the United States; each year, thousands more graduate from school. The number of massage therapists is skyrocketing, too. Ten years ago there were ninety schools teaching massage therapy; today you can find close to nine hundred. The field of personal coaching has exploded in the past three years, with training centers and associations forming to train and accredit thousands of new coaches. The marketplace is filled with experienced therapists, trying to stay in business, as well as newer therapists who are just getting started and willing to charge low prices. You face a lot of competition. The secret to expanding your business in a competitive market is to go beyond competency. To stay competitive, you need to be of consequence. To succeed in this market, you need to hone your skills and highlight your experience.
Gerald, a psychotherapist for over twenty years, complained to me about the difficulty of dealing with competition. With his full mane of gray hair, wire-rim glasses, and broad smile, he looks like a stereotype of a wise, approachable therapist. He teaches in a small town at a local university that graduates seventy-five masters-level psychotherapists each year, many of whom want to settle in the town. We looked at how he could stay competitive by using the following action steps. See if you can make use of these strategies, as well.
